    Beijing, China (AHN)-- In his first state visit to China, Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua toured China’s National Aquatic Center, also known as the “Water Cube”, on Friday, becoming the first head of state to visit the host’s Olympic venue(场馆)for water events.
    After the visit to the Water Cube, President Yar’Ardua said that he was “impressed by the engineering achievements that the Cube has made.” “I think all the athletes participating in the Beijing Olympic Games will have the same feeling.”
    A chemistry teacher by profession, Yar’Adua was interested in the filtration (过滤) methods being used by the facility(设备). President Yar'Adua was told that the facility uses active carbon to filter the water instead of using chemicals.
    The construction of the National Aquatic Center or the “Water Cube” took four and a half years before its completion on Jan 28, 2008. It has a bubble exterior(外部)and has a seating capacity of 17,000. It will host 42 Olympic events including swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.
    The Water Cube is an eco-friendly structure with a translucent(半透明的)shell which allows in natural sunlight, providing also heat and light and cutting energy use by up to 30 percent, according to the information provided by the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee.
